Dr. Andrey Kovachev, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament, met today with Mr. Salah Sukkar, Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of Syria

At the meeting, held at the request of the Syrian party the MEP, who heads the Bulgarian delegation in the European People's Party, strongly expressed his deep concern about the continuing violence in Syria.

Andrey Kovatchev pointed that the actions of the regime of Bashar al-Assad to his own people is unacceptable, and the daily information on the civilian casualties is staggering.
The Bulgarian MEP called for the withdrawal of the President Assad from power and starting
a democratic process involving all opposition forces under the supervision of the Arab League and the international community.

Only yesterday, the civilian demonstrators killed in the city of Homs reached more than two hundred. According to the UN since the beginning of the riots in March till December 2011 the number of the victims exceeds 5,000. On the background of the growing violence of the last weeks and the termination of the observation mission of the Arab League in Syria, the Security Council of the United Nations this week discuss a resolution that condemns the actions of the Syrian government and calls for a peaceful outcome of the severe crisis.
Andrey Kovatchev expressed his support for the resolution and noted that "the violence in Syria should be immediately terminated, then the military withdraw from the cities which are currently under siege." According to him time runs out for reforms and in the current situation political process could not begin without the immediate withdrawal of the Syrian president.
The Security Council of the United Nations is expected to vote on the resolution on Syria today afternoon.
